Solutions
- Water softening (ion exchange)
- Reverse osmosis
Nitrates are one of many forms of nitrogen compounds. They are highly soluble in water, and the portion that organisms cannot absorb easily enters groundwater, contaminating water in shallow wells, springs, and boreholes.
Why can this problem be dangerous?
Nitrates can convert into nitrites, which interfere with hemoglobin’s ability to carry oxygen in the body. According to Lithuania’s drinking water hygiene standard HN 24:2023, nitrite concentration in water should not exceed 0.5 mg/L, and nitrates should not exceed 50 mg/L (with a stricter limit of 10 mg/L for infants).
